Life is good and beautiful but when you add a dog into a man’s life, it becomes brighter and better day by day as the duo form an ineffaceable and unbreakable bond with one another and their love grows stronger and sturdier as time passes. With love and compassion from these dogs comes forever loyalty. Dogs and their humans have broken all the rules in existence that occur between the animal kingdom and the human population, bridging gaps, breaking bridges, and creating new rules in their new worlds that soothe both parties. This is a fact that has been established over time and will continue to hold ground but despite this, it’s utterly absurd, sad, and heartbreaking to find out that some of the dogs in people’s lives are subjected to the worst-case scenario and made to go through devastating situations. Such a scenario is seen in most puppy factory industries which have put their dogs up for harm in the way they use them for breeding constantly and without any care in the world for them or their health. This is the unique story of Ellie, a German shepherd shedding light on the dark corners of the puppy factory industry.
RESCUING ELLIE.
When we see a puppy up for sale in the pet store or even some that are up for adoption, the first thing that comes to mind is “How cute, I would love to get this one”, “Yes, just the dog I’m looking for”, “this is my dog”, and that’s probably the only thing in our minds even after the dog becomes a major part of our lives as best friends or as companions, we never think of where it might have come from, who its birth mother was and how would she be fairing. And that’s okay since we mostly have it at the back of our minds that their mothers must be doing well somewhere else across the country. We should now emphasize the fact that with every puppy sold, there’s a mother left behind in overcrowded and filthy living conditions in confined places with no hope for a better tomorrow. Ellie’s story, a mother dog sheds some light on the tragic and heartbreaking living situation and consequences of lives and that we might have been living with a lie that they were indeed fine when they never were.
Female dogs never get rest in between birthing each litter before they get pregnant to keep the puppy factory running while they’re stuck in confined kennels all through their lives and after they are rendered unable to serve this purpose again, they are either killed or dumped at a shelter where they might live out the rest of their lives. Getting walked, getting to be shown love, or patted which is normal for most domestic dogs are a luxury they are not afforded nor have access to. They never get to socialize nor are they given the privilege of getting any sort of medical care regardless of their situation before and after each birthing process. Their one job is to breed puppies but they never even get to nurture them as they are snatched away from their breast a few weeks post birth so this cataclysmic cycle can continue. This is the same way Ellie has lived and in the end, she was abandoned with severe complications that posed a danger to her life.
She was found in a dense forest, skinny and emaciated with festering wounds and bruises all over her body. She was used for breeding till she was weary both physically and mentally until her uterus fell out, dangling in between her hind legs. She must have been roaming for a while in excruciating pain and suffering before she was found and offered the hand of help.
A good Samaritan, Joey had sighted her while passing by as she was going camping and decided to help her upon seeing the terrible condition she was in. She was immediately taken to the hospital where she was thoroughly examined and said to be suffering from several diseases and infections. Along with her uterus, her urinary tract had fallen out, fleas, constant seizures, severe pain, and barely being able to walk were what she had endured for God knows how long. The basic posture every canine should be able to assume comfortably such as sitting, standing, and lying down, caused a lot of pain to her due to the collapsed uterus and urinary tract.
On examination, the doctor told Joey that she must have been in the condition for weeks and it was only a miracle the infections hadn’t deteriorated beyond that level and now her chance of survival was slim post-surgery. Having her organs outside for that long without medical attention posed a serious threat to her life. Joey became worried but decided to give her a chance no matter how slim it was as she wanted her to survive not only to get a loving home but also to experience human love and affection for once in her life and that brought tears into her eyes willing Ellie to live. Doing this to a dog until her health got worse and not making any attempt to salvage the situation despite what she had gone through at the hands of her owner is such a devastating and heartbreaking situation to behold. Everyone who saw and heard her story patted her as she has been strong for a long time and now they are encouraging her that it’s time for her to rely on people through the tough process of healing and be vulnerable and fragile letting them help her through it, it was such a beautiful gesture to her who had never had anyone care for her.
Though it was a difficult surgery, Ellie continued on her miraculous journey as the surgery was successful and went smoothly compared to how they had thought it would go, her reproductive organs and urinary tract were set back in place and she could lie down with minimal pain and discomfort unlike before. She was placed on antibiotics and painkillers intravenously. Throughout her journey of recovery, Joey never left her side, waiting, loving, and encouraging her to continue to heal. Soon, while at the hospital, she could go on walks even though she was still physically fragile and still had shaky legs but she was healing well. She started eating regularly and began to bond with Joey who had saved and given her a new chance at life instead of wasting away in severe pain until she died.
On discharge, Ellie was more than happy to go home with Joey to begin a new relationship with a renewed interest in life. Anytime she fed her or gave her her medications, she would pat her, kiss her, and hug her so that she knew that she was safe and could let her guard down. Ellie would kiss her in return as if showing her appreciation for being saved and given a new home away from the horrendous life she had lived the past couple of years breeding puppies without getting anything in return. The first time she felt the fluffiness and softness of a bed, she started barking and jumping on it, Joey knew that it would be her favorite place to be and was she right?
Day by day, Ellie began to improve and get used to this new life filled with love and affection, growing into this new relationship even though she didn’t gain much weight, she was eating and living we.
Six months later, Joey now takes Ellie on adventures to see the part of the state she hasn’t seen, to parks so she can have fun with other dogs, and on regular evening walks while still going for regular checkups. Ellie has now grown into a beautifully furred dog and lives as a happy, healthy, and well cared for dog its only job is to love her owner while eating well and getting showered with love and she’s starting to look the part and reciprocate the same. With love, kindness, and patience, a lot can be changed within a short period. We are glad Ellie gets to live a happily ever after life and has been through under the bus.
Ellie’s story has a happy ending but the majority of these mother dogs do not get lucky enough to have this. Though some of the authorities are trying their best to eradicate this practice and some have successfully banned it on their turf, it remains wildly spread like a wildfire leaving these dogs helpless and hopeless. We can only hope every story ends as Ellie’s but that’s near impossible.
