Job Description 

Accountability

• You will perform ultrasound procedures as departmental standards require to aid in the patient’s diagnosis and/or treatment.
• Furthermore, you will facilitate the provision of optimal patient care, and observe, and understand the hospital policies and procedures.
• You must also adhere to the hospital’s mission and value statements while maintaining patient confidentiality.
• Additionally, you will provide radiologists with high-quality imaging, and accurate, and complete preliminary technical impressions. As well as discussing ultrasound findings with the radiologist when needed.
• You will also carry out other duties related to the job classification as required.

Job Qualifications 

• Graduate of an accredited program in ultrasound technology.
• Possess ARDMS (CRGS) certification in abdomen and obstetrics and gynecology with preference given to those who are also RVT (CRVS). Eligibility for registration with ARDMS (CRGS) within six months of the hire date.
• Have recent experience in related areas of responsibility.
• You must be able to perform breast imaging.
• Highly experienced in general abdominal, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatric, vascular, and musculoskeletal.
• Have experience in ultrasound special procedures such as biopsies.
• FMF NT certification is an asset.
• Membership with Sonography Canada is also an asset.
• Proven skill in the production of high-quality ultrasound images.
• Team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills.

• Excellent attendance, punctuality, and work record.

Additional Information 

Hours Of Work: Currently days/evenings/nights, eight-hour shifts which include weekends and statutory holidays (subject to change by operational requirements). Furthermore, this position is eligible for the Employee Referral Reward Program. However, some conditions may apply.

Who Is An Ultrasound Technician?

An ultrasound technician is also referred to as a sonographer. They are responsible for operating equipment that uses high-frequency sound waves to record images of the internal organs. Furthermore, they work closely with physicians and patients, while playing a vital role in the diagnosis process.   

Generally, ultrasound technicians specialize in Abdominal, Gynecology, Obstetrics, Vascular, Musculoskeletal, and Pediatric Sonography. If you want to become an ultrasound technician, you must complete an accredited training diploma and have the necessary skills to be successful in the field.   

Qualities Of An Ultrasound Technician  

Attention To Detail

Ultrasound technicians must be able to assess and identify any problem with a patient’s ultrasound. Though there may be subtle differences between scanned areas attention to detail will help them accurately identify what the issue is. In addition, they need to follow the scanning protocols and use the correct steps to carry out the diagnosis.

People Skills

Ultrasound technicians often work closely with patients. As such, they need to have excellent listening skills to meet the soft skills requirement. It’s essential to meet people who are experiencing various medical conditions, understand their concerns, and help patients through the process is essential.

Excellent Hand-eye Coordination

An ultrasound technician must have the ability to move hand-held devices on a patient’s body while watching a video monitor. Careful hand movement and noticing even the slightest changes during the process are imperative to the process.

Team Work

ultrasound technicians often work as a link between a patient, the imaging department, and a healthcare professional. The ability to coordinate effectively and transmit patient concerns to the team helps improve the service.

Ultrasound technicians should not inform a patient of a medical condition and should maintain discretion for the complete diagnosis.

Sonographers don’t sit at a desk all day. Scanning patients all day, preparing exam rooms, moving equipment, and helping patients position themselves requires physical strength. There is never a dull moment, and physical strength is essential for professionals.

Ultrasound technicians usually work in a high-pressure facility with a busy schedule. Therefore, it’s important to be able to concentrate, be focused, and have mind flexibility. They might have to make independent decisions and should be able to cope with stress. Being an ultrasound technician also requires you to be patient and have a positive attitude. 

They will come across dire health conditions, and they must be able to emotionally deal with the situation. Apart from essential technical skills, ultrasound tech needs to work on the qualities mentioned above. It is important to improve yourself continuously and strive to be excellent at what you do.   

Interpersonal Skills 

Interpersonal skills are related to an individual’s ability to make connections with others. These include skills like communication, relationship building, teamwork, leadership, and motivation. To work with patients, ultrasound technicians must create trust relationships that will help patients communicate their questions and concerns. Additionally, they use their interpersonal skills when working with others in a healthcare team.

Look for volunteer opportunities that allow practicing the skills you want to improve. If you are looking to improve your ability to communicate with a certain group of patients, finding opportunities to work with them can help. Volunteering at a nursing home can provide you with work practice. 

Practice Self-care 

To maintain your skills and ensure you use them to the best of your ability during each shift, practice self-care techniques. Working as a sonographer, or in the healthcare industry can be challenging, therefore, you must have the skills to care for your well-being. Making a regular habit of caring for yourself helps you avoid burnout. Self-care skills include practicing stress management techniques, connecting with friends and family, getting enough rest, and exercising regularly. 

Seek Advice From A Mentor

The other way to improve your skills is to find a professional mentor or a senior role to learn from. Having an experienced person on your team who can regularly provide you with feedback and advice can be a great way to gain insights into your strengths and areas for improvement. 

The mentor can demonstrate effective skills, and train you in new techniques to help to find opportunities to develop your abilities. A mentor can also have connections with other professionals, providing you with networking opportunities to learn.
